Glenn County prosecutors have said they believe Hammonds may have victimized many children from his church, but only plan to pursue charges on behalf of two reported victims. Hammonds' prior criminal record from the 1970s, includes a bank robbery conviction and multiple drug-related arrests. Hammonds was arrested Nov. 20 outside his Tehama Street church by Glenn County sheriff's deputies after nearly a three-year investigation.

  3. I dunno if you guys noticed, but those were forty years ago? I don't know personally, but maybe he wasn't a Christian then? Everyone is so ready to judge, but do you have all the facts? I know that I don't from reading a news article, and I doubt that you do either. Maybe you should wait and see.

  4. The bank robbery and drug convictions were in the 70's.

The molestation charges are recent and still pending.

They've been investigating the guy for 3 years now, I would imagine that they have an airtight case, but we'll see.

  6. I doubt that a judge and juror, or the 2 girls that he assaulted, will take his apology to his invisible friend into consideration.

  10. Prosecute this sorry criminal to the fullest extent of the law. That he molested girls is bad enough. That he did so as a so-called Christian is even worse. That he did so as a CHRISTIAN PASTOR, (so-called) is monstrous. God is not mocked.

  11. Joe, where _do_ you get your patience? When we get the, er, "caliber" of commenter like "Anonymous Rob," we take the person apart -- and then print out such comments, hang them on a wall, and invite all our friends over to read, point, and laugh.

Seriously, just wanted to compliment you on RD, and this seemed as good an opportunity as any.

  15. Ex-pastor 'looking into' new trial

A new trial could be in the works for the former Willows pastor convicted of molesting two teenage girls from his congregation.

Carlton F. Hammonds faces a maximum prison sentence of 10 years and will be required to register as a sex offender based on the Glenn County jury conviction handed down in October.

Hammonds, 57, has apparently fired Adam B. Ryan, the attorney that represented him during the trial, and replaced him with Ronald D. McIver, a Red Bluff attorney.

Following Tuesday's proceedings, McIver said he was "looking into" filing a motion for a new trial, but declined to elaborate.

Hammonds, 57, was initially scheduled for sentencing last month, but prosecutors wanted more time to consider sentencing options and a possible psychological evaluation to determine if Hammonds is fit to serve prison time.

Judge Peter B. Twede ruled Tuesday that no psychological evaluation was necessary and set a new sentencing date for January.

Hammonds was convicted Oct. 1 of three felony counts of lewd acts and a misdemeanor count of sexual battery.

Prosecutors said Hammonds groped at least two girls during the summer of 2006.

Hammonds has always denied any wrongdoing.

Glenn County sheriff's deputies began investigating Hammonds in 2006, but staff turnover and a high case volume at the district attorney's office delayed the case.

Hammonds is due back in court Jan. 19 at the Orland courthouse for sentencing, however, his attorney could enter the motion for a new trial at that time.
